While in the area enjoy a dip in the thermal pools at the Tabacón Hot Springs. Explore the mangrove waters looking for many species of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife during your 3-4 hour boat tour to Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge. |
TRIP HIGHLIGHTS
|
| Feel the cool mists on your face as you explore
the Monteverde Cloud Forest, one of the richest
and most diverse tropical cloud forests in the New World. The reserve is
best known as home to the Resplendent Quetzal but also protects hundreds
of other birds, mammals, and plant species. Enjoy a visit to the Butterfly
Garden and Ecological Farm, which is a lower elevation belt of
regenerating forest, home to a different variety of plants and animals
like the 2-toed sloth, coatimundi and monkeys.
Carara National Park is located at the midpoint of the Pacific Coast. It has a transitional climate between the hot dry northwest and the rainy region of southwest Costa Rica and so contains flora and fauna from both regions. It is home to parrots, parakeets, toucan, trogons, three species of monkeys and one of only three viable populations of Scarlet Macaws in Central America. You may also wish to spend some time at the beach. En route back to San Jose enjoy a 2-3 hour boat trip on the Guacalillo Estuary and the Tarcoles River. This area, surrounded by a mangrove forest, is home to 250 species of birds and abundant wildlife. Among the most interesting sights are the Scarlet Macaws and large colonies of crocodiles, some measuring up to 20 feet in length. |
